Why we left Discord (an incomplete list)

We didn't leave because it's popular. We left because it started carding us at the door — then lost the guest list.

They wanted your face. Then misplaced 70,000 of them.

In October 2025, a breach at a third-party Discord support vendor exposed roughly 70,000 users' government ID photos, names and support conversations. Months later, Discord announced mandatory face-scan-or-ID age verification anyway — bold strategy, considering the "before" picture.

Closed source, open ego

Discord is closed-source. You can't audit what it does with your messages, you can't self-host it, and every feature ships on their timeline, under Terms of Service they can — and do — rewrite whenever it suits them. "Trust us" is not a security model.

Nitro: because "free" wasn't profitable enough

Upsells at every corner, sponsored "Quests" that track what you play so you can earn a badge, and a business model that ultimately answers to investors — not to the exhausted mods running your server for free at 2am.

It's not "your" server. It's a rental with vibes.

Your history, your community, your data — all sitting on someone else's infrastructure, one acquisition or outage away from not being yours at all. Weave runs on a box you can literally point at.
